Ilha do Maio

Ilha do Maio

May Island

Discovered in 1460, May is part of the leeward group and is one of the flattest islands in Cape Verde. Despite its volcanic origin, there are few traces of this origin because its highest altitude is Mount Penoso with 436 meters. Initially it was used like island of cattle raising, mainly goat. Its settlement did not begin until the end of the 16th century due to the great exploitation of salt, which was then exported to other countries, such as Brazil.

May, despite being a rather arid plain resembling a desert, its landscapes contrast with acacia forests due to a plan for reforestation of the island, several green oases and some palm plantations. Throughout the island there are extensive white sand beaches and a deep blue sea, the most famous being Ponta Preta beach. The sands are brought by the winds from the Sahara desert, which means that these beaches are chosen by the turtles to make their annual spawning, which proves to be of great tourist interest.

The largest settlement on the island is the Vila do Maio also known as English Harbor Village due to numerous wrecked British ships that formerly docked on the island carrying the salt. It is a very calm and beautiful city and its people are simple and hospitable. In May one can find one of the most beautiful and ancient churches of the archipelago, the Mother Church and some mansions that remember the ancient times. Not far from the village there is a fort, The Castle of May which was built in the 18th century to defend the island from pirate attacks.

A must visit is the locality of Barreiro where there are several colorful houses that are an attraction for tourists. To the north of the island is the town of Calheta, a fishing village in a small bay where the sea is very calm and close to the largest forest exploitation of Cape Verde with an impressive 3500 hectares. The Pottery Center of Calheta was built there, where you can find several typical decoration products.

Although there are more fertile areas, with vegetable growing fields that supply the whole island, the population is mostly fishing because there are several small ports near the beaches where large varieties of fish are fished. On all the beaches one can observe boats and canoes of beautiful colors that wait for the hour for another day of work. Livestock raising is still important on the island hence the production of meat, milk, dairy products and derivatives.

The most important traditional celebration of the island is the feast of the 3rd of May, feast of Santa Cruz and the preparations begin as early as the first week of April. Like other islands, there are various sporting, cultural and religious events, ranging from the 3rd to the 5th of May, ending with the tabanka parade and the return of the cross to the place of origin, the "Cruzeiro". The local gastronomic specialty is Caldeirada de Peixe. It is made with the most delicious varieties of fresh fish including grouper and lobster. It is a stew that uses sweet potatoes, yams, manioc, potatoes, squash and green bananas, a combination of mouthwatering.
