Ilha de Santa Luzia, Cape Verde

Santa Luzia é uma ilha do grupo de Barlavento do arquipélago de Cabo Verde. Actualmente desabitada, a ilha já albergou uma pequena comunidade de agricultores no século XVIII.

Administrativamente pertence ao concelho de São Vicente, sedeado na vizinha ilha homónima. A ilha de Santa Luzia e os ilhéus adjacentes (Branco e Raso) constituem uma reserva natural.

Curiosamente, embora várias ilhas de Cabo Verde tenham nomes de santos (a maior parte correspondente ao dia em que foram descobertas), Santa Luzia é a única que tem nome de uma santa.

A ilha é uma importante reserva natural de Cabo Verde e a única que não é habitada, devido às frequentes vagas de seca.

No século XVIII chegou a ser habitada por uma pequena comunidade que se dedicava à pastorícia, à pesca e à extração de urzela (líquen) e já no século XX, na década de 60, a ilha voltou a ser habitada por um casal, mas desde então permanece deserta de habitantes, tendo apenas a visita regular de pescadores vindos de São Vicente.

Com uma fauna marinha bastante diversificada e rica em espécies, é ímpar em momentos únicos como a desova das tartarugas nas praias.

A ilha integra a categoria de Reserva Natural Integral juntamente com os ilhéus Branco e Raso, que têm o acesso restringido apenas a fins científicos ou educativos. A autorização de acesso à reserva pertence, atualmente, à Direcção Geral do Ambiente, e está em análise um plano de gestão para que se possa estabelecer normas e atividades de turismo a realizar desde que não interfiram com a preservação ambiental e a conservação das espécies que ali habitam.
